About this archive

By Solver

This is a read-only archive of the Apolyton Civilization Site, rebuilt from September 2005 data, a few weeks before the release of Civ 4. Everything here is a static page, there's no way to log in, to use the forum search or to post anything.

The archive was rebuilt and posted in August 2026.

What is here

The archive has three parts:

  • The 2005 site and forums. This is what Apolyton looked like in September 2005, including the site content pages, downloads, the infamous Apolyton Directory and most importantly the forums including their own archive.
  • Eleven hosted sites of various Civ content that Apolyton hosted back in the day.
  • The UBB forums view, the original forums from 1998 to 2001, running on Ultimate Bulletin Board. 7444 threads are shown as they looked in 2001, with the original layout and images, and a reconstructed index page. The threads themselves are also in the 2005 archives, so this isn't new posts, this is a glimpse into what the first iteration looked like visually.

Of course Apolyton itself is still live at apolyton.net and it does have the majority of 2005-era forum posts still available, though this archive restores content that's not available on the live site.

What has changed

I kept the 2005 part as close as possible to what things looked like back then, here are some of the changes that were made:

  • A number of democracy game subforums that were team-private are now visible.
  • Three subforums had been deleted but their threads survived. These threads have now been restored into subforums.
  • Thousands of early posts were invisible or sorted wrong due to various bugs, they have now been restored.
  • Attachments were originally only available to logged in users for performance reasons, they are now available anonymously.
  • Broken links to numerous downloads that existed on the server were fixed. The Directory and the Essence server were, in 2005, mangling some file paths.
  • A handful of posts had passwords to shared Gmail accounts and the like in plain text. Just in case, these passwords have been censored. This was done through an automatic scan so there's no guarantee that no such posts are left.

Privacy and Security

The original 2005 database is woefully insecure by modern standards. It has not been uploaded to this archive website. Neither have any PMs been uploaded. If the archive's host gets hacked, there is nothing to be found there except these static pages.

The site also had an "ACS Photo Gallery" that the forum links to. It contains photos of a few dozen members. Originally that was only viewable by members, and I've kept the gallery inaccessible in the archive. Republishing 20+ year photos that were once members-only doesn't feel like the right call.

Similarly, member profiles had fields for full name and birth date. While most members certainly had no real data there, some of the names and birth dates are bound to be accurate so these fields have been stripped enirely from the archived profiles.
